A truck driver is in Timaru Hospital intensive care unit after being trampled by a 500 kilogram steer in South Canterbury on Wednesday morning.

A rescue helicopter was sent to Mt Peel Station after receiving a call.

One of the paramedics, Brent Williams, says the 53-year-old man was loading cattle onto his truck when a steer knocked him over and stomped on his back.

Mr Williams says the man is in a stable condition, but has chest, back and arm injuries and has lost several teeth.
