Police say two dangerous escaped prisoners were recaptured without difficulty.

They escaped from the Rangipo Prison on Wednesday and are back in custody after being captured at a house in Turangi. Police surrounded the property after midnight and found both men asleep.

The arrests took place without incident.

Police say they had approached a man and told him they had been rafting and had become separated from their friends. But an occupant of the house recognised them and called the police.

Police earlier described both men as dangerous and and said they should not be approached.

Stuart Martin Harrison, 23, was convicted of murder in 2004 after a stabbing outside a service station in Auckland and is serving a life sentence.

Sumit Carrik Narayan, 30, was convicted of aggravated robbery and unlawful sexual connection and was jailed for 15 years.
