Waterfront party venue decision to be made by June

A decision whether to keep the Cloud building on the waterfront in Auckland, will be made by June. It was built for the Rugby World Cup.

The Government paid $9.8 million for the structure at Queens Wharf, which is now being used for private functions.

Waterfront Auckland says the Cloud was meant to be temporary.

Options are being examined to see whether it could cater for the cruise ship industry like neighbouring Shed 10, which is almost definitely to be transformed into a Cruise Ship terminal.

Chief executive John Dalzell says the agency is considering whether the Cloud could host night markets, or house cafes and bars.

Meanwhile, $23 million has been earmarked by Auckland Council for the Shed 10 project. Construction is due to begin in August.
