A south Otago man has been charged in relation to the death of Timaru financier Allan Hubbard last year.

The 83-year-old died when the car he and his wife were travelling in and a four-wheel-drive vehicle collided north of Oamaru on 2 September. Jean Hubbard, who was driving, suffered broken ribs.

Mr Hubbard had been facing 50 fraud charges at the time of his death.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy says a 40-year-old man was charged on Monday with careless driving causing death, and careless driving causing injury.

The charges come after an extensive serious crash investigation by police.

He will appear in Dunedin District Court on Friday.

Police say they can't provide any further details because the case is now before the court.
