The electricity industry regulator is backing a $672 million plan to increase security of the power supply between the South and North Islands.

The job involves replacing a inter-island link known as Pole One.

The Electricity Commission says it intends to approve the work which will be carried by national grid operator Transpower.

A final decision on the proposal is expected by 24 October.
