Govt urged to use NZ internet specialists

Updated at 9:10 am on 15 February 2012

Some internet specialists say the work should stay in this country if the Government moves towards using more web technology.

Prime Minister John Key has said that with more mergers of Government departments, there will be greater use of technology for people to contact departments and access their services.

He says some work could be contracted out to the likes of the Google.

Catalyst IT, a New Zealand company, says the Government's internet drive is great news, but it should be stimulating the domestic sector instead of sending the work overseas.

Internet New Zealand says the only advantage of exporting the work is that it is cheap.

Lawyer Rick Shera says privacy is the big consideration when using overseas internet services.
