A police officer whose car struck a lamp post, which fell and seriously injured an Auckland school student, has been ordered to pay the victim $3,000.

Constable Aaron Jacob Holmes was convicted on Monday of careless use of a motor vehicle following the collision last August, which left Farhat Buksh with life-threatening injuries. The Auckland District Court also disqualified him from driving for 12 months.

In a victim impact report read to the court, Farhat Buksh said his friends want him to be the person he was before the accident.
