Tourist charged over campervan collision

A Canadian tourist has been charged following a crash in the Buller Gorge.

Police allege the 24-year-old man was exiting a layby near the gorge swing bridge at lunchtime on Saturday when his campervan was involved in a collision with a motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist was airlifted to Nelson Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition on Saturday evening.

The Canadian tourist and his passenger were not injured.

The man will appear in Nelson District Court on Monday to face a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle.
