7:20 am on 6 August 2008

The Government wants to halve the number of deaths on the roads by 2040.

Transport Minister Annette King says the target is to reduce the number of deaths to fewer than 200. Last year the road toll was more than 400.

The Government says it will achieve the goal by creating safer roads and vehicles, as well as lowering some speed limits.

The Government also wants to reduce the number of serious injuries caused by road accidents to no more than 1500 per year.
