Speculation over injured baby unhelpful - police

8:41 pm on 6 August 2008

Police in South Auckland say speculation about what happened to an injured four-month-old baby boy is unhelpful.

The boy was taken by ambulance from Papakura to Middlemore Hospital on Saturday night with what the police describe as non-accidental head injuries.

He was later transferred to Starship Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Senior Sergeant Denise Trail says police are still trying to establish the facts, and speculation about possible child abuse is untimely.

She says their focus is on finding out exactly what happened and investigators hope to speak further to the boy's parents, who are aged 18 and 19.

Ms Trail says Child Youth and Family has arranged for family members to take care of the injured boy's 18-month-old sibling.
