Spring Creek mine cleared to reopen

11:58 am on 23 February 2012

The Department of Labour has cleared the way for the Spring Creek mine to reopen.

The West Coast Solid Energy mine was closed by the Department of Labour on Monday because of concern over three safety incidents, including a generator fire and two system-alert failures relating to fans.

Acting Chief Inspector of Mines Gavin Taylor says he is confident the company has addressed the immediate concerns raised by the department.

He says Solid Energy is also working to address other potential risks that have been identified.

Mr Taylor says an audit will be done on Spring Creek's safety systems within the next month.

Solid Energy says it may not open the mine until next week because the company intends to meet standards beyond those imposed by the department.
