Details have emerged about a Wellington pensioner whose body was not discovered in a council flat until eight months after his death.

Wiremu Whakaue died sometime in 2009 and his remains were found in a flat in the suburb of Newtown in March 2010.

His power was cut off in August 2009, but his rent continued to be paid automatically by the Ministry of Social Development which paid his pension.

Wellington City Council has refused to comment on the case until an inquest in March.
