Construction on a $1.5 billion transport project in Auckland starts on Friday.
The Auckland Manukau eastern route will cut 10 minutes off the trip between Glen Innes and Mt Wellington when it opens in 2014.
Auckland Transport regional director Stephen Town says major work in the eastern suburbs of Auckland is long overdue.
Future projects include a dedicated bus lane from Panmure station to Pakuranga and Botany and a flyover on Reeves Road.
The whole project is expected to be completed by 2033.
