New call for set net ban

9:55 am on 25 February 2012

The World Wildlife Foundation says the deaths of two Hector's dolphins and a Maui dolphin this year strengthens its argument for a blanket ban on set net fishing.

The Hector's dolphins washed up on a beach in north Canterbury this week, entangled in fishing nets.

The foundation says the Hector's population is now about 7000, down from 30,000 in the 1970's.

Marine programme manager Rebecca Bird says limited restrictions on set net use are not good enough.
