Oil ship occupation continues

5:10 pm on 26 February 2012

A Greenpeace protester says there is no thought yet of coming down from an occupation on a derrick on an oil exploration ship at Port Taranaki.

Seven boarded the Noble Discoverer at 7am on Friday. One has since been arrested when he came down.

Vivienne Hadlow says their occupation has lasted longer than she thought it would and they will stay as long as they can.

Greenpeace climate campaigner Steve Able says supplies are holding out for the team.

But he says Saturday night was difficult because the protesters were blasted with hard rock music and had a spotlight trained on them all night.

A Shell spokesperson says a spotlight was used to light up the mast to ensure the group were safe during crane and other night time operations.

The company also understood that the music had come from an alarm clock.

The ship was scheduled to leave this weekend for the Arctic Ocean to search for oil off Alaska.

The protesters are perched 53 metres above the deck of the ship. Police say they have refrained for safety reasons from removing them.

The protestors won't say how they are going to the toilet and maintaining hygiene.
