The Interislander ferry service is hopeful that threats of strike action from Saturday evening can be averted.
The Merchant Services Guild, which represents officers on the ferries, has issued a strike notice which threatens to disrupt evening ferry sailings for a fortnight.
The strike will take affect from Saturday evening.
Nigel Parry, a spokesman for the Interislander, says talks are being held with the guild and it is hoped a resolution with the union will be reached before the deadline.
He would not discuss the reasons for the notice, or the guild's demands, but said talks between the parties began in March. ó\
