Work has begun on a $6 million cycle and pedestrian bridge linking a West Auckland community to a town centre on the other side of a motorway.
The West Harbour Community has been pushing for the bridge since a child was killed eight years while crossing the northwestern motorway.
Transport Agency's regional manager Tommy Parker says in addition to safety, the future growth of the Westgate Town Centre was a factor in the project.
The 200 metre long bridge should be completed in a year.
