Motorists are advised to take care on State Highway Two, the Rimutaka Hill Road between Wellington and Wairarapa due to heavy falls of snow.
At 8am on Saturday, the New Zealand Transport Agency says it had been sweeping the road since early morning and it remains open for now.
In the South Island, snow has closed State Highway 87 in Central Otago between Outram and Middlemarch.
