MetService has issued a severe watch for the North Island and is warning of a tempest of heavy rain and gales to hit on the weekend.
Spokesperson Daniel Corbett says severe gales, cold driving rain and heavy seas are likely for Saturday.
He says a deep low set to pass across the North Island is to blame.
