Police have named the British tourist killed in a quad bike crash in Waikato on Saturday morning.

She was Sarah Katie Bond, 24, from Essex.

Ms Bond, who was believed to be travelling in New Zealand alone, had arrived at the Waitomo Caves on a Kiwi Experience bus.

Police say it appears she lost control and crashed down a steep bank near Te Anga.

The quad bike operator has declined to comment. The operator is not connected with Kiwi Experience, whose parent company Tourism Holdings has sent senior managers to the area.

The remaining passengers from the Kiwi Experience bus stayed at Waitomo on Saturday night, and Tourism Holdings offered them services through Victim Support.

The death has been referred to the coroner, and inspectors from the Department of Labour are also investigating.
