Rise in council charges proposed

12:01 pm on 2 March 2012

Wellington City Council is proposing to raise user charges for facilities around the capital as it faces rising costs and tries to reduce its expenditures.

The council is looking at increasing charges for parking in the capital by 50 cents per hour.

It's also looking at raising charges for paid rubbish bags and setting a standard fee for all children using the regional aquatic centre.

Strategy and policy committee chair Andy Foster says the council has big challenges which include leaky homes and earthquake preparedness.

Cr Foster says the proposed changes are going to be discussed at a series of meetings next week.

About two thirds of the council's revenue comes from rates and a third from user charges.
