Infanticide admitted

12:47 pm on 2 March 2012

A woman in Christchurch has admitted killing her newborn baby and hiding it in a wardrobe, until the body was found her mother.

She appeared in the High Court Court in Christchurch on Friday morning and entered a guilty plea to a charge of infanticide.

The court was told the woman, 29, became pregnant in early 2010, but concealed the pregnancy from her family and gave birth in October 2010 in her bedroom.

She smothered the baby before placing her body in a wardrobe, where it was discovered by her mother 45 days later.

She was remanded to stay in Hillmorton hospital until sentencing next month. Interim name suppression is in place.
