Australia's Greens call for Royal Commission into asylum camps

7:15 pm on 20 February 2014

The Australian Greens have called on the prime minister to initiate a Royal Commission into the conditions and management of Australia's offshore detention camps, which led to the death of an Iranian man while in Australia's care in Papua New Guinea.

The Greens' leader, Christine Milne, says the tragedy of a refugee killed while in Australia's care should be the final nail in the coffin for Labor and the Abbott government's morally bankrupt and cruel offshore processing regime.

The previous government revived Canberra's policy of sending asylum seekers arriving by boat to detention camps abroad in 2012.

More than 70 asylum seekers were injured in attacks on Manus at the beginning of this week.

Ms Milne says there have been too many serious incidents in Australia's detention camps, all on Australia's watch.

She says a Royal Commission will shine a great big spotlight into the dark corners of exactly what happened on Manus Island, as well as the systemic abuse and failure in duty of care in these gulags.
