9:47 am on 26 February 2014

A Papua New Guinea police preliminary report has revealed the Iranian national killed at the Manus asylum seekers detention centre last week died from multiple head injuries.

The report stated that Reza Barati, who had been detained for 175 days, was fatally injured during the confrontation between transferees and G4S security guards inside the perimeters of the centre last Monday.

The police report, a copy of which was obtained by the Post-Courier, stated that Mr Barati sustained injuries which, according to a medical officer, could have been caused by a heavy object.

The officer examined the transferees before they were sent to the hospital for treatment and to be interviewed by police investigators.

Initial reports right after the incident alleged that the transferee was killed outside the centre by PNG police.

PNG's deputy police commissioner Simon Kauba told the Post-Courier on Monday the investigation has cleared police and locals.

Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrision has also admitted that the initial reports were wrong and the violence, which led to the death of Mr Berati, took place inside the Manus Island facility.
