9:47 am on 26 February 2014

American Samoa's Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga has been admitted to George Washington Hospital in Washington D.C. after a sudden illness.

The governor was in the US capital to attend the Department of Interior's annual meeting of the Interagency Group on Insular Areas or IGIA.

American Samoa's Attorney General Eleasalo Ale is standing in for the governor.

He says Lolo went in for a check up last Friday evening and as a result he was kept in hospital for further investigation and monitoring.

He would not comment further on the nature of the governor's sudden illness or whether he will return to American Samoa after he's discharged.
