Vanuatu workers get compensation from hospital contractor

A group of 31 workers in Vanuatu have won more than 10,000 US dollars compensation following complaints made against a local company.

The group worked for Dai Nippon Construction, a Japanese construction company, which won the tender to build the new Vila Central Hospital Complex.

Dai Nippon Contract subcontracted the work to local Vanuatu company Pacific Consulting Group Limited.

The workers claimed Pacific Consulting did not fulfil the terms of their contracts.

They say the company withheld superannuation payments to the NPF, and they were also charged interest for having their salaries paid in advance.

The group won their claims following several meetings with the Department of Labour, Police and Ministry of Health.
