Solomon Islands voter registration process on track

6:27 am on 7 March 2014

The Solomon Islands Chief Electoral Officer says the voter registration process is on track with ships carrying voter registration equipment having arrived in various parts of the country.

Polycarp Haununu says five ships carrying electoral officers and biometric voter registration equipment and materials are now at the Malaita Outer Islands, Makira, Ulawa, Temotu, Western and Choiseul Provinces, with other ships due to arrive in other parts of the country soon.

Mr Haununu says because the biometric voter registration system is new, officials will be visiting villages to educate people about registering and voting to ascertain a high turnout in this year's national elections.

A 40-day voter registration period starts on Monday.
