A policeman in New Caledonia has been shot in the leg as officers dealt with a car theft.
Police say the shooting occurred near Noumea in the early hours of Saturday after they caught up with a stolen car and detained one of the people in the vehicle.
The police officer, who was reportedly shot with a hunting weapon, was taken to hospital for an operation.
His life is not at risk.
An investigation is underway.
