PNG judge condemns violence as a way to resolve disputes

A national court judge in Papua New Guinea says the act of using weapons to chop people like firewood must be stopped.

Justice Salatiel Lenalia made the remark while handing down a 12 month suspended sentence to Niuva Ebry for wounding another man after an argument.

The newspaper, The National, reports that the sentence was suspended on the condition that Mr Ebry kept the peace for two years and paid the victim 162 US dollars.

The judge said the reparations were reduced because the victim later stole the roofing iron from Mr Ebry's home, but Justice Lenalia said that using weapons was not a way to resolve differences.
