Documentary on American Samoa football team hits US festival

A documentary on the American Samoa football team will be screened at a Manhattan film festival next month.

Next Goal Wins tracks the soccer team's journey from the world's worst team and a world record 31-0 loss to Australia, to finally triumphing over Tonga 2-1 in 2011.

Kristian Brodie, the Producer of the film, says he had the idea way back when the team had the record loss in 2001.

He says the introduction of a new coach, Dutchman Thomas Rongen, turned the team around, and the documentary.

"We knew the team were going to try to qualify for the World Cup but we didn't expect what happened to happen at all. I mean we couldn't have planned for it, and in fact the way that Thomas's intervention changed the story, and you know if you were to call it a screenplay, it's almost so perfect that were it actually written as a screenplay you wouldn't believe it."

Kristian Brodie says the film will be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, which starts on April the 16th.
