Flooding in Solomons capital leaves three dead

11:30 am on 4 April 2014

Three people have been confirmed dead after flash floods caused havoc in the Solomon Islands capital Honiara yesterday following two days of torrential rain.

Pacnews reports many are still missing and hundreds have been left homeless after strong floods swept away their homes along the Mataniko river which runs through the capital.

It says many more homes at White River and Rove were inundated.

On the Guadalcanal plains, hundreds of villagers headed for the hills last night as flooding took away homes.

Solomon Star reports it's the worst disaster the nation has seen.

It says China Town was hard hit when the Mataniko River bursts its banks washing away anything in its path.

The director of the National Disaster Management Office, Loti Yates, says 10,000 people have been evacuated, including those living in coastal villages.

The government has issued a warning asking people living along coastal areas, big rivers and streams to move to higher ground.
