The oil and gas multi-national Exxon Mobil says its US$19 billion Liquified Natural Gas project in Papua New Guinea has started production ahead of schedule.

Last month, Exxon said that the project was due to start during the middle of the year, which was already ahead of the earlier expected commencement time of late 2014.

The first cargo from the project is expected to be shipped to Asia markets before the middle of this year.

Exxon says the project is expected to produce more than 9 trillion cubic feet of gas over 30 years of operations.
