The chairman of the Media Industry Development Authority in Fiji says if members of the media do not like the Media Decree, they have a constitutional right to fight against it.
Ashwin Raj was speaking as a panelist at a University of the South Pacific discussion to mark Media Freedom Day.
The event was organised after USP cancelled Media Watch's debate on issues relating to the media and elections, because of concerns it could have been in breach of the Electoral Decree.
Mr Raj says the constitution overrides any other law.
"If people have issues with the Media Decree, fight it against the constitution. Exercise reason. Use it catachrestically. The constitution at all times remains the backbone document. If you think certain provisions remain in contradiction or empty out the meaning of the constitution, go back to the Bill of Rights."
Ashwin Raj has urged Fiji journalists to think critically, rather than be a mouthpiece.
