New Caledonia's Ponga seeks re-election

12:50 pm on 20 May 2014

New Caledonia's Maurice Ponga is seeking re-election to the European parliament as one of the three representative of France's overseas territories.

A total of 19 lists are vying for the positions in the 766-member parliament, which is to be elected for a five-year term this weekend.

Mr Ponga has just secured the continued support of France's UMP as well as several leading New Caledonian politicians, like Pierre Frogier, Simon Loueckhote and Harold Martin.

One seat is assured to go to the French Pacific after the 2004 poll saw all three French overseas seats go to politicians from La Reunion in the Indian Ocean.
