Court stops CNMI hospital power cut

The sole hospital in the Northern Marianas has won a temporary restraining order to stop the utlities corporation from disconnecting its electricity and water supply.

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation was threatening to cut off the sewerage service on Wednesday.

The Superior Court Associate Judge, David Wiseman, ruled that the hospital would suffer immediate and irreparable injury if the services were to be disconnected, and critical healthcare would be at risk.

The corporation has been at loggerheads with the hospital over late payments, and recently rejected an offer of 325,000 US dollars from the hospital to settle the dispute.

The corporation's lawsuit, filed in December, says the hospital owes over $9.5 million dollars, before any interest amounts.
