Hosts Fiji began the Oceania Under 20 Football Championship in emphatic style yesterday, thrashing American Samoa 4-0 in the opening match of the tournament.

Saula Waqa opened the scoring in the 15th minute with all four goals coming in the first half.

In the other matches on day one, Vanuatu edged New Caledonia 1-0 thanks to a Justin Koka strike midway through the second half and Papua New Guinea scored in either half to beat Solomon Islands 2-0.

The Championship is being decided in a round-robin format with the winner to join hosts New Zealand as Oceania representatives at next year's Under 20 World Cup.
