Fiji party calls for reinstatement of scholarship

8:16 am on 30 May 2014

The leader of the People's Democratic Party in Fiji says the apparent withdrawal of a student's scholarship over politics is a threat to democracy.

Felix Anthony says the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board has terminated a student's scholarship for actively supporting independent candidate Roshika Deo.

Mr Anthony says the board's decision will instill fear in young people and he is challenging the board to reconsider its position.

"What we are concerned about is that this Government has attempted to try and disqualify groups of people to not take part in the political activity of the country and in this case the targets are students who are beneficiaries of government scholarships."

Felix Anthony says he understands that the student in question will no longer be able to continue their studies.
