Togiola vies American Samoa's US Congress seat

A former governor of American Samoa, Togiola Tulafono, says he still has a desire to serve the public, and can take his history of service to the territory, to the role of delegate for the U.S Congress.

The 67-year old now joins three other candidates who have already officially announced their candidacies and hope to unseat the incumbent, Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, in the November 4th general election.

Togiola had first served as lieutenant governor from 1997 until 2003 when he became governor and held the post until his last term in office in 2012.

He says if successful, he plans to be proactive in the role, saying American Samoa is facing a difficult time transitioning into a global economy.

"And yet we are still being bogged down with the inability to get national recognition in policies that should help American Samoa move forward in developing for itself, being self-sustaining and to help our local government steer the roles through possibly more self-governance."
