Fiji's leader challenged on media claim

8:55 am on 14 June 2014

The former president of the Fiji Law Society says Fiji's leader, Rear Admiral Frank Bainimarama, is hypocritical for accusing media of bias against him

Dorsami Naidu has resigned from the Law Society and is one of 19 candidates so far named by the National Federation Party for this year's election.

He says Rear Admiral Bainimarama's comments at the launch of the Fiji First party show that he doesn't understand what a free media is.

Rear Admiral Bainimarama had attacked the Fiji Times for bias, but Mr Naidu says the Prime Minister has control over the national broadcaster and has favourable treatment by most other media outlets.

"I think he's got to look at himself in the mirror and hear his own voice played back to him because he has suppressed the media for so long that he doesn't know what a free media is and what criticism is, I mean, he thinks he's above criticism. And if he thinks he's done the right thing then let the people be the judge."

Dorsami Naidu says the Fiji people are not stupid and can make their own minds up.
