2:27 pm on 18 June 2014

Six medical professionals from Taiwan arrive in Kiribati next week to volunteer at the central hospital in South Tarawa.

The Kiribati Independent reports the four doctors and two nurses from MacKay Memorial Hospital in Taiwan will spend one week there.

A representative of Taiwan's embassy in Tarawa, Maya Huang, says the team consists of specialists in cardiology, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology.

She says the cardiologists will bring a portable ultra-sound machine to detect heart diseases.

The volunteer service is funded by the Government of Taiwan to boost the relationship between the two countries, and also as part of Taiwan's campaign to participate in the World Health Organization.
