PNG's O'Neill agrees with Court ruling

9:36 am on 2 July 2014

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister says he agrees with a national court decision reiterating that the courts cannot interfere with the work of police.

Peter O'Neill's comment comes after Justice Ere Kariko dismissed an application for a stay on an arrest warrant issued on the Prime Minister two weeks ago over his alleged involvement in corrupt payments from the government to a law firm.

Mr O'Neill told a press conference that he welcomes the court decision and will leave it up to the Police Commissioner to determine whether there is a case for him to answer.

Our correspondent, Todagia Kelola, says however it is the courts who issued the warrant in the first place.

"This is not like a request by the police. It is a court order... a court arrest warrant that was issued by the court. So that warrant is still alive and if police don't implement that order, it might be contemptuous to the court."
