The American Samoa Power Authority has completed the first phase of a project to explore the potential for geothermal power.

Specialised aerial surveys, geological mapping and water and soil analysis have identified an area of potential geothermal development on the western part of Tutuila.

The second phase starts this month and will involve scientific instruments placed in the ground at about 100 locations to measure the geophysical characteristics at over one mile deep.

Final results of the investigations will determine whether test drilling will start at strategic locations early next year.
