An extension at Foou Hospital in Niue for elderly patients constructed by a New Zealand teen is expected to be completed on Saturday.
The hospital, which only has space for eight elderly patients to share four rooms, was rebuilt after Cyclone Heta destroyed the old one in 2004.
The Masterton 17-year-old, Matt Wilson, says the kit-set extension was built in Masterton, flat-packed into containers and shipped to Niue.
He says there are now two new structures, made up partly by the containers used to ship the building materials and tools.
"One structure, that's got space for four bedrooms, but the internal walls fold to the back wall to create a large open dining area or function area. Then there's a courtyard in the middle which will be planted and paved. There's a container with a massive roof over top of it with an extension built out, and that's been turned into a toilet, laundry and kitchen."
Matt Wilson says the project, which cost about 80,000 US dollars, was funded by a number of sponsors and raffles.
