New Caledonia fugitive recaptured

Security forces in New Caledonia have recaptured one of the four inmates who escaped from the territory's only prison in April.

The arrest of Jean-Paul Kamodji was made in St. Louis and announced by the public prosecutor in Noumea.

Reports say investigators are now trying to establish if he was involved in the violence seen along the main road near St Louis.

His escape in April was described as well planned as the four inmates managed to break through a door and use sheets to scale the walls.

It was the first escape since November 2012 from the Camp Est jail which is among the most overcrowded prisons run by France.

Meanwhile, there has been a protest by prison staff about a lack of secutity and inadequate means to do their job.
