Fiji NGO cancels election discussions

4:17 pm on 7 August 2014

Fiji's Citizens' Constitutional Forum has postponed its series of panel discussions on the elections after a complaint by the supervisor of elections, Mohammed Saneem.

The supervisor has referred the issue to Fiji's Independent Commission against Corruption for investigation.

Mary Baines reports.

"CCF says it strongly rejects allegations its first conversation in the series on free and fair elections last week was in breach of the Electoral Decree. The Forum's head, Akuila Yabaki, says the panel discussion was not a voter education event, but rather aimed to promote dialogue on the elections and 2013 constitution. He says it is difficult to control the topics discussed by panelists and audience members in such a forum. Mr Yabaki says the CCF has postponed its conversation events on the separation of powers, bill of rights and the transition process until further notice. The Forum is calling for the complaint to be withdrawn and the FICAC investigation to be discontinued."
