The PNG Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates says a proposed law that would stem the defections of MPs from the Opposition to Government is now being worked on.
Alphonse Gelu says there is also a submission before the Cabinet to change and increase the Opposition's budget allocation from two percent to six percent so that the alternate government can have access to elite advisers for the MPs in the Opposition to benefit from professionally.
Mr Gelu told the Post-Courier last week that the registry had proposed a new law, which will not only keep members to their parties but make it tougher for them to leave.
Party movement has been a feature of parliament since the 2010 Supreme Court ruling, which watered down restrictions on party-hopping in the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates.
Mr Gelu said this needed to be tightened for the sake of a vibrant parliamentary democracy.
