The Chinese government has given Fiji just over 13 million US dollars in what is being described as a token of good will.

FBC News reports that the money was given following talks between China's president Xi Jinping and Fiji's president, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

It quotes the Fiji Ministry of Foreign Affairs permanent secretary Amena Yauvoli as saying the amount provided by China is targetted towards Fiji's economic development.

This included assistance towards the improvement of Fiji's road network, assistance in the health sector and strengthening trade and economic opportunities between the two nations.

China is a key lender to help the Fiji regime bankroll developments in recent years.
