A refugee advocate in Australia says a 24-year-old Iranian asylum seeker who was evacuated from Australia's detention centre on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea last week has been declared 'brain dead'.
The Refugee Action Coalition says Hamid Kehazaei was medivacced from Manus Island to Brisbane last Wednesday suffering from septicaemia caused by an infection that spread from a cut in his foot.
The hospital has reportedly told Mr Kehazaei's family that a guardian will at some stage be appointed to make a decision on whether to switch off life support.
The coalition's head, Ian Rintoul, there have been scores of infections and complaints of a lack of medical attention on Manus Island.
He says Mr Kehazaei's quarters on Manus Island has recently been evacuated and shut down.
The Manus centre and the conditions asylum seekers are kept in has come under fierce criticism since an asylum seeker was killed and scores of others injured during clashes in February.
