Fiji election debate welcomed

9:25 pm on 3 September 2014

Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama will go face to face in an election debate with the leader of the party he sees as his main opponent in the polls.

Rear Admiral Bainimarama says the election is only a contest between his FijiFirst party and SODELPA which is led by the paramount chief of Rewa province Ro Teimumu Kepa.

Several party leaders have challenged the Prime Minister to a debate.

Ro Teimumu says she's looking forward to the sessions which will be broadcast on state-run television and radio.

"I'm looking forward to it very much. That's a bit of a turnaround for him because he'd been telling the world that he's not going to be bothered about any other party since he's going to be taking all fifty seats so that's a bit of a turnaround and a come-back and I don't know what else."
