New Zealand names Fiji election observers

1:38 pm on 4 September 2014

The New Zealand foreign minister, Murray McCully, says New Zealand will contribute a five person team to the Multinational Observer Group for the Fiji election - the first in more than eight years.

He says the New Zealand team will be led by a former deputy prime minister, Wyatt Creech, who according to Fiji media arrived in the country more than a week ago.

Mr McCully says the team will have four other current and former parliamentarians, including John Hayes, who has been the private secretary for foreign affairs.

The monitoring group is jointly led by Australia, India, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Polling began yesterday in remote areas, with the bulk of votes due to be cast on September the 17th.
